Maldives hold talks with the US on counter-terrorism measures

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has met with senior diplomats from US State Department and discusses ways the US could assist Maldives on counter-terrorism measures.

During his visit to New York to attend the 74th Annual Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Foreign Minister Shahid met with the Under Secretary of the State Department David Hale and acting Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia Alice Wells.

Minister Shahid discussed collaboration with the US to ensure peace and security in the Indian Ocean. The other topics discussed include strengthening democracy, counter-terrorism measures and strengthening the economy of Maldives.

Since his appointment, Minister Shahid has met with US diplomats on a number of occasions. He has also travelled to the US upon invitation from Mike Pompeo, the first ever foreign minister to receive an official invitation from a US Secretary of State.

Foreign Minister Shahid is accompanying President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his official visit to New York to address at the UNGA.
