President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said he expects the efforts of the government to solve the problems of foreign labourers in the country will bring favourable results within a year.
Speaking at a press conference held at President’s Office, President Solih stated about 130,000 Bangladeshi labourers are working in the Maldives, adding about 60,000 of them do not have proper legal documents to work in the country.
The president has formulated a government policy to solve the problems of expatriate labourers and the authorities are working on to implement those plans to bring a desirable change. The plans include not issuing new work permits for foreign labourers for a period of one year and limiting the number of imported labourers in Maldives.
President Solih said there are black networks who bring in cheap labour to Maldives and such illegal acts will not go unchecked.
