Parliament to hold extraordinary sittings starting next week

Parliament has scheduled to begin extraordinary sittings from September 22 onwards to deliberate on the proposed amendments to the Prevention of Terrorism Act. PSM News has received information, this decision has been made in accordance with clause 89 of the Parliament Regulation, seven days after the first reading of a bill.

At an extraordinary sitting of parliament held on September 12, the first reading was held on the proposed amendment to the Prevention of Terrorism Act of 2015. The Speaker of Parliament gave MPs the opportunity to express their opinions on the bill, at that sitting.

Opining on the matter, MDP representatives at parliament expressed concerns regarding the proposed amendment. Some members questioned the purpose of the government proposing the said amendments while the parliament was in recess. Others expressed discontent regarding how the Speaker was handling procedures related to this specific bill.

Defending his actions, Speaker of Parliament, former president Mohamed Nasheed stated that the procedures were in accordance with principles and procedures prescribed in the Parliament Regulation.
