Maldivians have lost faith in the Government: Opposition

The opposition coalition of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) has claimed the people of Maldives have lost faith in the government which they have elected with high hopes.

Speaking to the press after the first trip to the atolls by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom after the loss in the presidential election last September, President of PNC Abdul Raheem Abdulla said the delegation noticed the people have lost faith in the government during the visit to the islands. Abdul Raheem said all three islands they visited in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll showed massive support for President Yameen, while the support for the current government have weakened. He explained the purpose of the trip was to strengthen the party and to increase support for the PPM-PNC coalition as they prepare for the local council elections.

Former Vice President Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed also participated in the trip headed by President Yameen to Mahibadhoo, Kumburudhoo and Dhangethi.

Speaking in Mahibadhoo, in the first ever rally held after the election loss, Yameen expressed grief over key figures leaving the party when their efforts were direly needed to strengthen the party. He also called on them to return to the party.

Some recent developments saw many influential politicians who served in the Yameen administration joining Jumhooree Party (JP), a key partner of the government coalition.
