Maldives not dependent on one nation: Foreign Secretary

Foreign Secretary Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed has stated Maldives is not dependent on any one nation and that it aims to act in what most benefits its citizens.

Responding to critics claiming ties with China have weakened since President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assumed office last November, the foreign secretary mentioned in a programme aired on PSM News that Maldives have transformed from an isolated nation in the global world to an influential and a respected nation.

Abdul Ghafoor said the lift of sanctions and acceptance from various international non-governmental organisations is strong evidence to the efforts of the administration to repair broken ties with the international community. He also explained the support Maldives received during the Indian Ocean Conference and Maldives Partnership Forum is further evidence to the fact that the global community has accepted the country after years of isolation. He added the investments in Maldives will be transparent and just.

The foreign secretary expressed Maldives will not depend on just one nation in overseeing development projects. Abdul Ghafoor highlighted while the administration attempts to sustain and strengthen the relationships it has with its current international partners, it also aims to build ties with new partners from the international community.

Furthermore, the Maldivian diplomat assured the administration will retain China as an important partner in the development of Maldives.
