European Union has pledged 2.5 million euro to assist in the efforts exerted by the Government of Maldives to curb terrorism and extremism.
Addressing in the parliament, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini revealed the same importance given to the protection of the Indian Ocean must be given to combat terrorism and violent extremism. Mogherini assured the European Union will always assist in the efforts of Maldives to work in the area. Reiterating European Union will work closely with the Government of Maldives, Mogherini noted the works done for the protection and safety of the Indian Ocean are hard and challenging.
Furthermore, Mogherini revealed Minister of Defence of Maldives Mariya Ahmed Didi has reassured Maldives will continuously work against terrorism and extremism. She said 2.5 million euros was granted to boost the relevant works and to assist the initiations.
Moreover, in the address, Mogherini spoke on her political life and highlighted she first started her career in the Italian Parliament. She further expressed gratitude for the opportunity given to address the Maldivian Parliament. In addition, she supported the efforts of the government in protecting the environment and the projects initiated to promote climate change.
Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed presented her with a special map portraying Indian Ocean in the early 1500s.
