Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed has extended Independence Day greetings to Maldivians. In a statement issued marking the 54th independence day of Maldives, Parliament Speaker sent independence day greetings on behalf of himself, parliamentarians and the parliamentarian staff to all Maldivians.
In the message, the parliament speaker shed light on the events of independence on historical view. In this regard, Nasheed noted that Independence Day has been celebrated in Maldives since the agreement with the British government, adding Maldives first celebrated Independence Day on April 24, 1948.
In the address, Nasheed highlighted in 1965 further amendments were made to the agreement and published in the gazette, declaring Maldives a full-fledged independence country. He added Maldives today is marking political independence as well.
