High Court overturns Criminal Court verdict on Former Colonel Fayaz

High Court of Maldives has overturned the Criminal Court ruling on former Colonel Ahmed Fayaz in relation to the explosion on the presidential speedboat in September 2015.

The High Court overturned the 2-year jail sentence over obstruction of justice and the 3-year and 18-months jail sentence for obstructing the duty of law implementing staff. The High Court ruled unanimously that it is not relevant whether former colonel ordered soldiers to act in obstruction with the constitution or the penal code.

The court also ruled the charges raised against Fayaz are unclear, adding the prosecution did not clear it out during the proceedings.

When the blast occurred on the presidential speedboat, Ahmed Fayaz was the Head of Special Protection Agency and was in charge of the armoury and the explosives department.
