Ahmed Naseer resigns as MMA Governor

Ahmed Naseer has resigned as the Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

The resignation of the governor comes amid several allegations against him. In this regard, allegations include Naseer influencing the efforts of Head of Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) to stop the money laundering case of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

The Parliamentary Committee on Finance is currently looking into a claims that Naseer stopped FIU from submitting the case to Maldives Police Service. The case was submitted to the committee by the former head of FIU Abdulla Ashraf. Naseer had allegedly expressed disappointment when Ashraf shared the information of the transactions to President of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Hassan Luthufee. Ashraf further claimed Naseer pressured him to resign from the position when he submitted the case to Maldives Police Service, stating Naseer said that the situation does not allow to submit a case against former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, as the presidential election was close.

Naseer was summoned to the parliamentary committee and questioned although no decisions were made regarding the matter.

Naseer was appointed as the governor of the central bank on August 24, 2017.
