Maldives begin generating electricity from waste to energy

Maldives has begun generating electricity from waste to energy for the first time.

Maldives began generating electricity from waste from the waste management facility in Vandhoo in Raa Atoll, as part of the pledge by the administration to transform waste materials to a revenue generating source.

Vandhoo becomes the first island in Maldives which provides electricity from renewable energy, according to Ministry of Environment. The facility in Vandhoo will produce 5 megawatts of electricity every day.

The project costs USD 3.4 million and was funded by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENE). Vandhoo have made steps to implement safe waste disposal methods and is the waste management hub in the region.
