Luthufee detained in Maafushi prison with high security

Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz has revealed Abdulla Luthufee is detained in Maafushi Prison with high security.

Abdulla Luthufee, the mastermind behind the most dangerous terrorist attacked Maldives faced, was brought back to the country by Maldives Police Service on July 9. He was directly handed over to Maldives Correctional Service to complete the remaining 4 years of his 25-year jail sentence.

Speaking to PSM News, Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz said inmates brought back to the country are required to undergo assessments, adding Luthufee was also initially kept in Male' Prison to complete the assessments of Maldives Correctional Service. However, Munaz added he has been shifted to Maafushi Prison after two weeks following the completion of medical and psychological assessments.

Furthermore, Munaz said when keeping inmates, any disruption which may be caused by the inmate are considered, highlighting since Luthufee spend many years in escape, he is kept in high security.

67-year-old Luthufee fled when he was sent to India for medical treatment on January 10, 2010. All attempts to bring Luthufee under custody failed, although Maldivian authorities came close to capture him in 2014 and 2016. It is believed that he travelled to Sri Lanka from India under a false identity.

Meanwhile, Maldives Police Service has begun investigating a case regarding Abdulla Luthufee fleeing custody and evading capture for 9 years.

In November 1988, Luthufee led the coup assisted by armed mercenaries of Tamil secessionist organisation in Sri Lanka, the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE). Over the attack, Luthufee was charged with conviction for treason and sentenced to death.
