President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed Maldivians who have fled and joined the conflict in Syria would be brought back to Maldives.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, President Solih said Maldivians in Syria would be brought back to the country and rehabilitated before they return to the community. The president noted dozens of Maldivians, including women and children have been isolated and are living in refugee camps following the defeats faced by terrorist groups such as ISIS.
The president highlighted those Maldivians are not under the protection of an international government and would face difficulties in bringing them back to the country. He expressed the government of Maldives does not know the exact number of Maldivians in Syria, adding the information passed on by foreign governments and agencies are insufficient.
However, the president revealed efforts are underway to bring Maldivians from Syria with the assistance of United Nations and other international organisations.
