Luthufee will not be pardoned, will be jailed: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has claimed Abdulla Luthufee is the most dangerous criminal Maldives have seen in recent history, adding he would not be pardoned.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, President Solih noted Abdulla Luthufee is the biggest traitor of the country and the position has not changed over the years. The president said Luthufee would not receive a presidential pardon and maintained he should complete the remainder of his 25-year jail sentence. He said Luthufee is under the custody of Maldivian security forces in Sri Lanka, assuring he would be brought back to Maldives.

Speaking about the delay in bringing Luthufee back to the country, the president explained there have been challenges as the Attorney General of Sri Lanka was removed following the April 21 bombs attacks in the country. He highlighted the situation in Sri Lanka is tense and the necessary procedures should be followed to bring Luthufee to Maldives. He added the administration must pay for air tickets and a further 3-thousand US dollars for visa, as Luthufee has fled and overstayed in Sri Lanka after travelling for medical treatment in 2010.
