Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations has approved to sign a prisoner exchange agreement with India.
Five of the 9 parliamentarians in the committee voted in favour of the agreement. However, the decision was faced by heavy criticism from opposition parliamentarians.
The agreement ensures India to freeze or take over investments made in Maldives by a person India declares as a convict.
Before approving the decision, the committee met with experts from relevant authorities including, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Attorney General’s Office, Prosecutor General’s Office and Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
