Parliament passes a motion to ban single-use plastics by 2025

Parliament of Maldives has passed a motion calling on all government offices and authorities to ban single-use plastics by 2025. The motion was passed following a request made by students from 16 schools during a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee on Environment and Climate Change.

The motion passed with the votes of 64 parliamentarians called to ban various types of single-use plastics and to conduct awareness programmes for the public. The motion called to ban the use of plastic bottles, straws and bags in Maldives and to take necessary steps to achieve the target.

Furthermore, the motion called on the government offices and authorities to introduce environment friendly products to replace single-use plastics.
