Saudi Binladin Group signs amended agreement to develop new terminal

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has signed the amendment contract with Saudi Binladin Group (SBG) for the development of the new international terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA). The agreement was signed by acting Managing Director Moosa Solih and CEO International of SBG Paolo Bigi.

As part of the airport expansion project, Saudi Binladin was handed the project to develop the new terminal in May 2016. However, due to unfavourable reasons, the project has not been conducted efficiently.

According to the acting Managing Director, the project has not progressed due to technical issues faced in designing the concept of the building and raising the finances for the project. He added all issues have now been solved.

Speaking at the ceremony, CEO International Paolo Bigi expressed gratitude to the government for believing in SBG and handing over the project, adding the project will be concluded according to the schedule. The new terminal will feature the history, culture and tradition of Maldivians, according to MACL.

Detailing on the changes brought to the agreement and design, Associate General Manager of MACL Mohamed Salah revealed the total value and the size of the project were unchanged.

The new terminal development will cost USD 357 million.
