Home Ministry investigating illegal release of an inmate

Ministry of Home Affairs has begun investigating an illegal release of an inmate.

An inmate was released illegally in the last batch of 200 inmates who were granted commutations by the president, according to home ministry. Investigations have been launched following information that an inmate who was not granted commutation was released from prison, the ministry said.

Furthermore, the home ministry revealed the Maldives Correctional Service has been asked to take any administrative measures after conducting necessary investigations. Noting an official request has been forwarded to Maldives Police Service to investigate the issue, the home ministry noted the aforementioned inmate is now in custody for investigation purposes. However, the ministry did not detail why and how the inmate was released, or from whose negligence the inmate was released or how the issue was identified.

The president granted clemency with several conditions to inmates with exemplary disciplines, people who were detained without proper examinations and for inmates jailed for a period of more than fourth of the sentence. All inmates were commutated sentences in accordance with the Clemency Act, according to President's Office.

Under the president's sentence commutation, major crimes such as murder, terrorism, child abuse, homosexuality and drug trafficking are excluded.
