Parliament of Maldives has formed 17 parliamentary committees. The 17 committees include 13 committees to oversee the mandates of the government and 3 committees on the role of the parliament.
Instead of the usual 13 committees, the parliament passed to form 17 committees with the votes of 77 parliamentarians. The new committees formed include Judiciary Committee, Decentralisation Committee, Environment and Climate Change Committee, State-owned enterprises reviewing Committee and Human Rights and Gender Committee. The parliament has also formed an 11-member temporary committee to appoint members to the 17 permanent committees.
Furthermore, the parliament passed to amend its regulations to increase the debating duration given to parliamentarians to 4 hours. While the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has secured a supermajority in the parliament, parliamentarians from other parties will be provided with a very small duration if the previous regulation was followed.
The newly elected Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has assured to provide duration for members in uniformity.
