Parliament to amend regulations within a month

Parliament of Maldives has decided to amend and approve the parliament regulations within a month. The vote was passed with the consensus of all 81 parliamentarians in attendance.

An eleven-member committee has been formulated to amend the regulations. The committee consists of Parliamentarians Adam Shareef, Abdulla Riyaz, Ahmed Amir, Saud Hussain, Hassan Latheef, Rozaina Adam, Ilyas Labeeb, Ibrahim Shareef, Moosa Siraj, Ahmed Shiyam and Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.

Article 88 of the constitution states subject to the provisions in the constitution, the parliament shall determine and control its administrative arrangements, hiring and firing of employees, determination of salaries of employees, and manage all matters concerning the sittings of parliament. It also states the parliament shall make regulations and principles concerning its business, with due regard to representative and participatory democracy, accountability, transparency and public involvement.

The current parliament regulations came into effect in 2010. Since then, parliamentarians have called for reform, to facilitate equal opportunities for all parties represented in parliament.
