Finance Ministry to release funds to parties after deducting fines

Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has sent to Ministry of Finance to release funds for political parties after deducting the fines.

In this regard, ECM requested finance ministry to release funds for four political parties. While four parties consist of a membership of over 10,000, USD 1.6 million from the state budget will be distributed among these parties.

Detailing the matter, spokesperson and member Ahmed Akram revealed ECM had requested to release funds last Thursday, adding the amount will be given after deducting the fines over failure to follow laws and regulations.

Only the main ruling party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Jumhooree Party (JP) and Maldivian Development Alliance (MDA) will receive funds from state budget. While finance ministry will release over USD 828,160 to MDP, PPM will receive USD 595,240, JP will receive USD 132,635 and MDA will receive USD 131,341.

Meanwhile, a fine of USD 6,146 was deducted from funds for PPM over illegal expenses and 3,882 was deducted from funds for MDP.
