The main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has become the largest political party in the country with over 50-thousand members.
Speaking at the inauguration of the discussion held with political parties, President of Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) Ahmed Shareef there were 4 political parties with membership of over 10-thousand in the beginning of the year, although membership of two parties have since decreased.
In this regard, MDP, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Jumhooree Party (JP) all had a membership of over 10-thousand in the beginning of the year. However, membership numbers of JP and MDA have fallen since then, according to the head of the electoral body.
MDP consists of 54,302 members, while PPM now have 38,020 members.
