Five airports to begin commercial operations this year

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has revealed operations in five new airports will begin this year.

Minister of State for Transport Ministry Ahmed Zuhair said the project to develop Kulhudhuffushi Airport in Haa Dhaalu Atoll will be completed in July. Currently the construction of the terminal of the airport is underway and will be completed by June, according to state minister. A runway of 1,200 metre in length and 30 metre in width is developed in Kulhuduffushi. Although the airport was opened last year, operations have not commenced due to lack of necessary buildings.

Moreover, the state minster revealed operations in Maafaru Airport in Noonu Atoll and Funadhoo Airport in Shaviyani airport will commence in August. Zuhair said development of the runway in Funadhoo has been completed along with equipping the airport with fire lorries and other administrative equipment. Currently efforts are also underway to complete the terminal and fire and rescue building, he added revealing the airport development project is expected to be completed by July, while operations are set to begin in August. A runway of 1,000 metres is developed in Funadhoo Airport.

Meanwhile, the government is also plans to begin commercial operations in Maavaarulu and Madivaru by the end of this year.
