Ministry of Islamic Affairs has revealed dates donated by Government of Saudi Arabia will be distributed to the poor this year.
Previously, Islamic ministry stated priority will be given to lowest-income families or the poor people registered at the ministry. Over 8,000 are registered as poor people in Maldives, according to the Islamic ministry.
Dates will be distributed by Islamic ministry and local councils. Islamic ministry has now begun sending date packages to islands. Islamic ministry said dates have now been handed over to councils of 31 islands. Meanwhile, Male' City Council expressed the procedure and timings for distribution will be announced soon.
Moreover, Islamic ministry said each household in the list of poor will receive a date packet and the remaining date packets will be distributed on first come, first serve basis.
Saudi Arabia donated 50 tonnes of dates to Maldives commemorating the month of Ramadan.
