China to establish desalination facilities in Maldives

Embassy of China in Maldives has revealed a new desalination facility in Male' city and micro grid desalination facilities would be established in five islands as part of the Fifth Power Project.

Revealing information on the projects conducted in Maldives by Chinese companies, the embassy highlighted the Fifth Power Project, scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, will provide a permanent solution to the electricity shortages faced in the Greater Male' Region. The Fifth Power Project would connect the electricity network of Male' Hulhule' and Hulhumale' via the Sina-Male' Bridge.

Noting Maldives face shortages of clean drinking water, the Chinese Embassy it has been agreed with the Government of Maldives to establish desalination facilities in the capital and five other islands.

China currently conducts 3 projects in Maldives, with another 4 projects conducted with the assistance from China. The projects include the Fifth Power Project, maintenance of the completed Sina-Male' Bridge, social housing projects in Hulhumale' and projects included in the expansion project of Velana International Airport (VIA).
