Supreme Court upholds high court order with regard to Adeeb

Supreme Court of Maldives has upheld the order issued by High Court to transfer former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to house arrest.

On January 28, High Court of Maldives ordered to transfer former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to house arrest until the conclusion of the case filed regarding his medical care, which was filed at the Civil Court. A case was filed on behalf of Adeeb alleging lack of necessary healthcare in prison and requesting to attain medical treatment from abroad. However, the Civil Court discontinued the case, stating necessary procedures had not been followed by Adeeb, under the regulation to provide medical care for inmates from abroad.

In the appeal, filed by the state, it requested the Supreme Court to rule the High Court stay order to transfer Adeeb to house arrest is invalid. When the appeal was filed, Supreme Court issued a stay order to postpone implementing the High Court ruling to transfer former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to house arrest, until the Supreme Court reached a verdict on the matter.

In March, Maldives Correctional Service, transferred Adeeb to house arrest under specific conditions.

Adeeb has been sentenced to serve a collective 33 years in jail, after being convicted for the explosion on the presidential speedboat during the previous administration, and for some cases that have been tried at court with regard to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal. He has served over three years of the sentences.
