Judicial Reform Action Plan officially launched

Chief Justice has expressed confidence on the establishment of a praiseworthy socio-economic justice system, on the implementation of the Judicial Reform Action Plan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Justice Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi said the plan will focus on developing the judiciary to meet the standards required by the government. He stated the road map consists of establishing a system to grant promotions to judges, strengthen the implementation of sentences, establishing superior courts in every city and strengthening the judicial administration policies.

Moreover, the chief justice assured the implementation of the roadmap will help regain trust of the citizens towards the Maldivian judiciary. The roadmap highlights reforming the judiciary by amending the constitution.

Allowing the courts to operate independently and free from corruption is one of the key pillars of building a strong judiciary. The road map also states the importance of amending laws to better fit the current situation of the country and reforming the judicial framework to ease the road to reaching justice. The roadmap for judicial reform, which is spread over 20 major focus areas, was drafted based on extensive discussions from the Judicial Conference on Judicial Independence and Reform held in February.

The roadmap was inaugurated by Chief Justice Ahmed Abdulla Didi at a ceremony held at Islamic Centre. The ceremony was attended by Parliament Speaker Qasim Ibrahim, Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath, cabinet ministers, judges and lawyers.
