18th parliament cycle comes to a close

The Parliament of Maldives has passed the Bill on the Amendments to Judges Act during the last sitting of the 18th parliament cycle.

The amendments to Judges Act was passed reviewed by the committee with 25 votes in favour. Meanwhile, 20 members voted against the bill there were 2 abstentions. The committee report was presented by the chair of the committee Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

While the amendment was passed as reviewed by the committee, members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) expressed concerns over passing the bill in the brink of a new legislative cycle.

Monday's sitting marks the end of the 18th parliament term which comprised of 85 parliamentarians elected in 2014. The 19th parliament term will commence in June following the oath taking ceremony on May 28.
