President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has granted commutations to 201 inmates with certain conditions. President Solih granted clemency to inmates who can be pardoned within the law and regulations.
Spokesperson at President's Office, Chief Communications Strategist Ibrahim Hood said the president granted clemency with several conditions to inmates with exemplary disciplines, people who were detained without proper examinations and for inmates jailed for a long period of time. He revealed all inmates were commutated sentences for eligible inmates in accordance with the Clemency Act.
According to the spokesperson, the commutation is conditional and infringing any of the conditions of the commutation voids the commuted sentence and authorises the president to reinstate the original sentence. Further, the conditional commutation does not affect the inmate's obligation to pay compensation where applicable.
Under the president's sentence commutation, major crimes such as murder, terrorism, child abuse, homosexuality and drug trafficking are excluded.
