No new information to disclose on Afrasheem case: Riyaz

Parliamentary Group Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) reveals there are no new information to be disclosed in the murder case of religious scholar and former Parliamentarian Dr. Afraasheem Ali. Abdulla Riyaz made the remarks on a programme aired on PSM News.

Initially, Riyaz, who served as the police commissioner when the murder took place in 2012, said he has more information on the case, adding no suitable platform have been provided to disclose the information. However, speaking on PSM News, Riyaz said all information he received will be with Maldives Police Service, as he received the information as he was the police commissioner. He went on to affirm there are no new information in his possession to provide to the Presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances as well.

Furthermore, Riyaz expressed he believes all information in the police service will be provided to the presidential commission. Riyaz, who was severely criticized for not commenting on the matter, said he does not wish to discuss the matter on social media as some individuals are still under investigation.

When asked whether Riyaz would voluntarily go and provide information to the presidential commission, Riyaz stated he does not currently wish to do so, adding if summoned all information he is aware of will be provided, although he believes the institution has already acquired the same information from the police service.

The presidential commission published a video seeking further information. Numerous information has been received regarding the video made public to identify individuals connected to the investigation of the murder of former Parliamentarian Dr. Afrasheem Ali, according to presidential commission.

The state prosecuted against two individuals on the brutal murder case. However, only a youth named Hussain Humaam was found guilty of the charges.
