Maldives to release Sri Lankan fishermen

Maldives have decided to release 25 Sri Lankan fishermen, according to reports.

Reports in Sri Lanka say the Government of Maldives has agreed to release the 25 Sri Lankan fishermen under Maldivian custody before the Sinhala and Tamil new year. Recently, Maldivian authorities detained four Sri Lankan fishermen and four multi-day fishing vessels for violation of their maritime boundary. The fishermen are now being held at a detention camp.

Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department Padmapriya Tissera said the necessary finances to obtain visas has been sent to the Maldivian authorities.
