Opposition coalition, Progressive Congress, has congratulated the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for its landslide victory in the parliamentary election. Initial results show MDP has secured 67 out of the 87 seats in parliament, the highest any party has won since Maldives adopted a democratic multiparty system in 2008.
Speaking to PSM News, Ibrahim Faisal, a council member from People’s National Congress (PNC), which makes up the Progressive Congress, said the opposition coalition congratulates President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his MDP for winning about 67 out of the 87 seats in the parliament, according to the initial results of the election. He expressed hope the president and his party will use the super majority in achieving the pledges made to the people during the presidential election held last September.
The opposition coalition only managed to win just a handful of the seats but pledged to continue working in holding the government accountable.
