Maumoon congratulates MDP, backs government

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has congratulated the main ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for winning a super majority in the parliamentary election. Initial results show MDP has secured 67 out of the 87 seats in parliament, the highest any party has won since Maldives adopted a democratic multiparty system in 2008.

In a tweet, former President Maumoon reflected the high number of seats won by the government in the election has given strength to the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to achieve the pledges made during the campaign trail. He assured his political movement will stand firm with any individual who works for the benefit of the people.

Former President Maumoon endorsed 20 candidates for the election. However, none of them won, according to the initial poll results, including his son, Faris Maumoon. Maumoon had been a key figure in securing the presidency for President Solih last September.
