President assures to maintain coalition despite MDP securing majority

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has assured to maintain the ruling coalition despite securing a super majority in the parliamentary election.

In a statement regarding the parliamentary election, President Solih said many of the coalition partners in the administration were contenders in the election while some were opponents. Mentioning the coalition, the president reiterated assurance the coalition remains intact. The president reminisced the hard work by coalition partners to bring the country back from the brink of former administration’s disastrous rule, assuring to continue to work with the leaders of all coalition partners to ensure the pledges are delivered to the people.

Moreover, President Solih congratulated all the individual winners, especially Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) which has secured a super majority in parliament. The president expressed, while celebrations continue, not to forget the immense challenges that lie ahead. In the statement, he mentioned some challenges such as the work to strengthen democratic institutions and deliver basic services for citizens.

Furthermore, President Solih noted fulfilling the promise of bringing corruption, past and present to book and ending impunity starts now. He expressed hope to working with all of the elected parliamentarians to realize the promises to the people.

On conclusion, President Solih congratulated various institutions who ran the election in exemplary fashion, adding the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM), Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) deserve exceptional praise for conducting an election worthy of the Maldivian people’s democratic aspirations.
