Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid has said any possible return of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom will destroy the hopes people had following the presidential election held last September. The foreign minister made the remarks ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled to be held next Saturday.
In a tweet, Minister Shahid said the immense sacrifices of many in the struggle against tyranny would have been in vain, if Yameen returns. Moreover, the foreign minister stated the history and coming generations will not forgive who are instrumental in resurrection of a tyrant regime. He made the remarks at a time when Jumhooree Party (JP), which is part of the ruling coalition, has begun working with the opposition coalition, led by Yameen, for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Although Criminal Court, on March 13, ordered to keep Yameen in custody until the end of the ongoing corruption investigations, the High Court has overturned the decision on March 28.
