Ministry of Health has launched Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine Programme. The campaign was launched by Minister of Heritage, Arts and Culture Yumna Maumoon.
HPV is a very common virus; with about 14 million people, including teens, become infected with HPV each year. Realising the importance of the HPV vaccine, Maldives introduced a campaign initiated by the President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
As part of the campaign, girls of between the ages of 10-14 will be vaccinated until June 21. After June 21, HPV vaccine will be included in the national immunisation schedule and given to girls aged 10 and above.
Addressing the ceremony, Heritage Minister Yumna spoke on the importance of HPV vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.
Furthermore, Director General of Health Protection Agency (HPA) Maimoona Abubakur highlighted the commendable works of the health sector in eliminating diseases which can be prevented by vaccines. She further noted cervical cancer is by far the most common HPV-related disease and getting HPV vaccine is the most important step to prevention.
In the populous islands and in the capital, Male' City, vaccines will be provided in schools while in remaining islands, vaccines will be made available from health centres.
Introducing HPV vaccine to Maldives is a pledge included in the first 100-day pledge policy of administration.
