Elections Commission calls to hold primaries according to Islamic principles, constitution and party charters

Elections Commission of Maldives calls on all political parties to arrange party primaries according to Islamic principles, constitution and party charters.

The advice from electoral body came in a tweet made by the spokesperson of the commission, Ahmed Akram as Maldivian Democratic Party is holding its primary elections.

MDP said 270 ballot boxes would be placed, including in India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. 86,031 voters would be eligible to vote, with 279 candidates competing in the primaries.

The main ruling party has announced primaries would be held for 77 constituencies. The polls would be held between 1430 hours and 2130 hours on Friday. Maldives Police Service would provide security at polling stations.

The party also announced 36,000 new members signed with MDP to coincide with the party primaries.
