MRM awaits Supreme Court decision on PPM leadership

Maumoon Reform Movement (MRM) reveals its candidates will contest from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in the parliamentary elections, if the Supreme Court concludes the case regarding the leadership of PPM in favour of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

Noting 108 individuals have expressed interest to contest for 80 constituencies on a ticket provided by MRM, the movement led by former President Maumoon revealed the candidates and constituencies will be finalised after interviewing.

Moreover, MRM said if the Supreme Court declares Maumoon as the leader of PPM, the selected contestants who expressed interest to run on tickets provided by MRM, will contest as candidates from PPM. MRM said in any other situation, the contestants will compete as independent candidates.

PPM, which is currently led by former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has already issued tickets to some contestants without a primary. A case has been filed at the Civil Court alleging Maumoon was removed from the party against the constitution and the party charter.
