Government to grant authoritative power to island councils next week

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed powers and authorities will be granted to the councils will be handed over in the coming week.

Addressing the ceremony held to inaugurate the water and sewerage facilities in Dhiffushi in Kaafu Atoll, President Solih noted the government aims to provide the citizens with better living facilities. The government also aims to establish a pleasant atmosphere in Maldives under the decentralisation policy of the government, stated the President.

Moreover, the president underlined as the first step, the powers and authorities that can be granted to island councils will be announced in the coming week. President Solih added the amendments to the Decentralisation Act will be reviewed, amended and sent to the parliament within a month.

Furthermore, the president revealed in the coming week many authoritative powers will be handed over to Male' City, Addu City and Fuvahmulah City in efforts to empower the councils.
