Former President Nasheed to represent Maldives at COP24

Spokesperson for the President-Elect Mariya Ahmed Didi has announced former President Mohamed Nasheed will represent Maldives at the COP24 Climate Change Conference in Poland, as a special envoy of the President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Speaking at a press conference, Mariya Ahmed Didi said while the high-level segment of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP24, will be attended by Mohamed Nasheed from December 3-4, the ministerial segment held from December 10-14 will be attended by cabinet ministers of the incoming government.

Mariya added former president brought the vulnerability of Maldives to international attention with an underwater cabinet ahead of the Cop15 Conference in 2009. Noting the major efforts exerted by the former President Nasheed makes him an active advocate of the environment; Mariya stated Nasheed received a huge support and recognition at COP15.

During COP24, topics will focus on achieving the Paris Agreement. Maldives was among the first nations to sign the momentous Paris Climate Change Agreement in 2016.
