National "Hashiheyo Raajje" health initiative launches in Villingili

The nationwide "Hashiheyo Raajje" fitness and wellness programme has officially kicked off in Villingili, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, opening with an energetic water aerobics session along the island’s beach.

Initiated under a special directive by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to build a healthier population, the programme is being rolled out across all inhabited islands in the Maldives. The movement is managed by the Department of Fitness and Recreation under the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness, with local implementation organised directly through island-based sports counselors.

Speaking to PSM News following the launch, Deputy Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness, Ahmed Ashfan, emphasised that building local capacity is central to the initiative’s long-term success. He revealed that the government plans to have fully trained sports counselors established in every region of the Maldives by November this year.

"The public response has been quite positive, and participant numbers are increasing. Notably, water sports activities are being enthusiastically pursued by senior citizens and women. This initiative strengthens community bonds while encouraging everyone to work toward a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

The Villingili programme, taking place from 28 to 29 August, features physical exercise sessions led by veteran fitness instructor Ismail Ahmed. The training provides foundational exercise techniques for both land and water, showing participants how to make optimal use of natural local resources for daily exercise.

In addition to physical activity, the program adopts a holistic approach to wellbeing. Healthcare professionals from Gaafu Alifu Atoll Hospital are delivering nutrition awareness workshops covering balanced diets and weight management, while the organisation Advocates for the Rights of Children (ARC) is conducting specialised sessions on Child Safeguarding and Sports Awareness.

The launch event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry, alongside members of the Villingili Island Council. A total of 40 participants—including regional sports counselors from across the Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu Atolls, as well as local institution representatives—are attending the two-day workshop, which aims to serve as a model for community-driven health initiatives across the nation.
