Information Commissioner urges to be responsible and to prioritise good-will in ensuring RTI

Information Commissioner Abdul Aziz Jamal Aboobakur has urged to be responsible and to prioritise good-will in ensuring the right to information in Maldives. The information commissioner made the statement on the occasion of the International Right to Information Day.

Information Commissioner Abdul Aziz Jamal Aboobakur noted a tradition has been established by government authorities and institutions to release and publish information which have been well-received by the public. Noting it is a responsibility of an authority or an institution to provide necessary and relevant information for the public, the information commissioner said there is no benefit or any good that will come from withholding information. In this regard, the commissioner noted publishing information will show transparency and in turn the authority or the institution will gain public trust. He highlighted the importance of providing information to stop the efforts of corruption in the country.

Furthermore, the information commissioner underscored publishing necessary and reliable information will assist in the development in the country, enhancement of the economy and establish social harmony.

After failing to pass Freedom of Information Law, in May 2008, the government of Maldives instituted the Right to Information Regulations by executive order making it mandatory for government departments to provide people access to information about their working. The regulations came into force in January 2009.

International Right to Information Day, marked on September 28, is an international day of recognition designated by the UNESCO General Conference.
