Maldives Meteorological Service has stated Maldives will not be affected by the recent earthquake that has hit Indonesia.
Buildings were damaged and one person died after two earthquakes and a series of aftershocks struck off the coast of Indonesia, according to local authorities. The first quake was measured at a magnitude of a strong 7.5 off the coast of the island of Sulawesi, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and was followed by at least 10 aftershocks.
The earthquake destroyed houses, killing one person and injuring at least 10 in the town of Donggala, which sits 56 kilometres from the epicentre of the quake, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.
Meanwhile, the Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert for the areas between Baa Atoll and Addu City. The agency outlined torrential rain, average strong winds of 23-29 mph with gusty winds of 50 mph, rough seas and swell wave surges are expected.
