President-Elect says the days ahead will not be easy, calls for unity

President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated he saw widespread corruption and theft, during the campaign trail and notes the need for reform of the institutions.

Addressing the National Council of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for the first time after emerging victorious from the presidential election, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said justice seemed to be non-existent in the country. The president-elect noted the days ahead will not be easy and there was a lot of work that needed to be done. Therefore, the president-elect urged the national council to remain united during the transitional period and even after the government is formed. Noting the several obstacles the coalition faced during the course of the election, the president-elect noted the party overcame all obstacles with unity and loyalty. He noted committees have been formulated to communicate with government institutions for the official transfer of power.

Furthermore, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih noted the support he received in the past two days including from foreign parties and international partners such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe, Sri Lankan opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and the government of US.

At the meeting, the national council members congratulated Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and expressed gratitude for those who contributed to the victory in the presidential election.
