President officially inaugurates Laamu Link Road, pledges an international airport for the atoll

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has pledged the airport in Kadhdhoo will be upgraded to an international standard airport if he secures a second term in office. The airport in Kadhdhoo will be upgraded to accommodate the largest aircraft in operation within the first two years in to his second term in office, President Abdulla Yameen said addressing the citizens of Thundi in Gan.
Furthermore, the president stated every citizen seeks development, adding lack of land owned by the citizens proves to be an obstacle in enhancing the opportunities available. In this regard, the president revealed 400 plots of land will be handed over to the citizens from Gan in the next two weeks. The president further noted the efforts of the government to fulfil the basic necessities of the citizens.
The president revealed only USD 2.26 million was spent for the development of Gan before 2013, while nearly USD 40 million was spent for the development of the island by the current administration.
Moreover, President Yameen officially inaugurated Thundi District Harbour and Laamu Link Road, as part of his visit to Gan. After innagurating the Laamu Link Road, the president drove to Fonadhoo from Gan.
The development of the 17-kilometre link road in Laamu Atoll was completed in August 2016. The USD 2 million project was funded through a grant aid provided by the government of China. The Laamu Link Road, which stretches across the longest dry land in Maldives, connects Gan, Maandhoo, Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo.
