MDP rejected request to handover development of islands to councils: Shujau

Former Vice President of Local Government Authority (LGA) Shujau Hussain has stated Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rejected requests to handover development of islands to the local councils when it was in power from 2008 to 2012. Former Vice President of LGA made the remarks responding to pledges made by MDP presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stating the authority of developing islands will be given to the respective councils.
Noting that councils and its mandate were passed by the parliament and not the government, Shujau Hussain stated, when in power, MDP did not give it a priority to let the councils govern the islands. He cast doubt the principles will change if MDP once more comes to power.
