Government of Maldives has initiated Roadside Dustbin Pilot Project to enable proper dispose of trash.
In a ceremony held by the Ministry of Environment and Energy and Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), dustbins were placed in four areas in the capital city, Male'. The first dustbins were kept by Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, Deputy Minister of Environment Ministry Ali Amir and Chairman of WAMCO Mohamed Siraj.
The main objective of the project is to ease issues related to dumping waste and to eliminate the collection of waste to road junctions, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said addressing the function. Noting the public complains lack of dustbins kept on roads, the Minister expressed hope the project will solve these issues. Furthermore, WAMCO has decided to manage and empty the dustbins as part of its corporate social responsibility, according to the Minister.
The dustbins kept in Male' city are specially designed for the project, according to Environment Ministry.
