Parliament of the Maldives has endorsed the amendment to the Judges Act, which states that a sitting Judge would lose his position, on being delivered a guilty verdict in connection to a criminal offence. This amendment to the Judges Act was approved with 37 votes in its favor.
The amendment bill proposed to the parliament by Member of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla states that if any judge is found guilty of committing a criminal offence, the judge would be suspended by the Judicial Service Commission without a running salary, until sentencing.
The Judges Act does not state a term for people appointed as judges as per the Maldivian Constitution. This means that once appointed as a judge, he would remain so, until retirement age.
