Former National Security Advisor of India Shivshankar Menon has emphasised the current political situation in Maldives does not warrant any form of Indian intervention.
Shivshankar Menon, who had served as the National Security Advisor of India from 2011 to 2014 under former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, noted that though former President Mohamed Nasheed had asked for Indian intervention, the country had to study various aspects of the political situation in Maldives.
The position is not similar to the situation when India sent its troops to neutralise an attempt of People Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) to stage a coup against the government of Maldives in 1988, the former Foreign Secretary of India said while delivering a lecture at the annual Techno-managerial Festival of National Institute of Technology. Highlighting the current situation is totally different, Shivshankar added India cannot take any decision in haste.
Former president Nasheed wants India to move in, throw out the present government and put him back in power, claiming that the term superpower itself does not have a solid definition, according to Shivshankar. Speaking about the internal security of Maldives, Shivshankar suggested that significant reformation should be made to strengthen it.
The former National Security Advisor noted there is a balancing effect in international relations, noting the relations between China, Maldives and India.
