Maldivian delegation returns after attending HRC segment

The Ministerial Delegation of Maldives has returned after attending the High Level Segment of the 37th Session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) held in Geneva. The Maldives Delegation was led by Minister of Education Dr. Aishath Shiham, who was accompanied by Minister of Gender and Family Zenysha Shaheed Zaki.

During the High Level Segment, Education Minister Aishath Shiham delivered a statement as the head of the Maldivian Delegation. The Education Minister highlighted the accomplishments of Maldives in securing the civil, political, economic and social rights of Maldivian citizens. Appraising the Council on the judicial overreach that set in motion of a Constitutional crisis in the Maldives following the Supreme Court's order of February 1, the Minister noted the importance of international stakeholders to stand together with the Maldives in its quest towards ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution.

Furthermore, the Maldives delegation also held bilateral meetings with senior officials of the United Nations and a number of heads of Delegations attending the High Level Segment. During the meetings, the Ministers briefed the officials on the ongoing political developments in the Maldives and exchanged views of support and engagement. The Ministers further highlighted the commitment of the government to ensure free, fair and credible elections in September and noted the government is ready to welcome international stakeholders to observe the electoral process in Maldives.

The 37th Session of the Human Rights Council will continue for three weeks and the Maldives engagement at the Council will be led by Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva Dr. Hala Hameed with Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Javed Faizal and First Secretary of the Maldives Mission in Geneva Aishath Shahula.
