Daily life of law abiding citizens are normal in the Maldives

Deputy Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Office at Geneva says that daily life of law abiding citizens are normal and no rights are barred to them, adding that no individuals will be given the chance to disobey the law. Jeffrey Salim Waheed made the statement in a roundtable discussion aired on Turkish TV channel, TRT World.

Discussions were focused on the current situation in Maldives, with Maldives represented by Deputy Permanent Representative Jeffrey Salim Waheed and Parliamentarian Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, who were joined by two international analysts in the panel.

Answering a question posed at the programme, the Deputy Permanent Representative said the State of Emergency only applies to those under investigation in relation to an attempted judicial coup, adding that law abiding citizens would not be affected. Jeffrey Salim Waheed noted that investing in the Maldives is open for all foreign companies, responding to statements made on the programme regarding the relations of China, India and Maldives. He emphasised that no island has been sold to China and added that any such information circulated is false.

Moreover, the United Nations Representative reiterated that vessel Xin Yuan 18, masquerading as a Maldivian ship, flying Maldivian flag, allegedly engaged in a ship-to-ship transfer of goods in international waters with a North Korean vessel, has never been registered in the Maldives.
